What is it doing?
Describe the symptom and we can usually tell you what it points to before you bring the car in. Pick the closest match.
- 01Jerks or bangs when shiftingUsually worn clutch packs or a solenoid holding pressure too long. Most common on 2nd to 3rd.
- 02Engine revs but the car does not pullThe clutches are slipping under load. Worst going uphill or overtaking, and it gets worse quickly.
- 03Long pause before it engagesA two or three second delay into Drive or Reverse points to low line pressure or a tired pump.
- 04Whining or droning that rises with speedOften the torque converter or a worn bearing. Left alone it puts metal through the whole unit.
- 05Stuck in one gear, warning light onLimp mode. The control unit has logged a fault and locked the gearbox to protect it. It needs reading, not resetting.
- 06Burnt smell, dark fluidThe fluid has overheated and stopped protecting the clutches. Act on this early and you may avoid a rebuild.
- 07Red patches under the carA transmission leak from a seal, pan gasket or cooler line. Cheap to fix, expensive to ignore.
- 08No reverse, or reverse only when warmA failed reverse clutch or drum. Classic on higher mileage units and it will not improve on its own.

How the job runs
The part that worries people is paying for work they cannot see. So here is the whole sequence, including the point where we stop and show you.

Diagnose
Road test, fluid check and a computerised scan of the transmission control unit. We read the stored faults rather than clearing them.
- 02
Quote
You get a price before anything is opened. If the diagnosis changes what is needed, we call you before continuing.
- 03
Strip
The unit comes out and is dismantled completely. Every clutch pack, drum, seal and bearing is inspected out of the case.
- 04
Show you the findings
We show you the worn parts, in person or by photo on WhatsApp, and confirm the final cost before a single new component goes in.
- 05
Rebuild
New clutch packs, seals, filter and any hard parts that failed inspection. Valve body and torque converter reconditioned where the job calls for it.
- 06
Road test
Refitted, filled to spec and adaptations reset, then driven properly. Shift quality is checked hot, not just idling in the yard.
- 07
Warranty
You leave with two years of cover and no mileage cap. The conditions for your job are printed on your invoice.

Check your own fluid first
Automatic transmission fluid starts bright red and darkens as it burns. It is the cheapest diagnostic there is, and you can do it in your own driveway.
Bright red
Clean, translucent and slightly sweet smelling. The fluid is doing its job.
Nothing to do
Deep red to brown
Normal darkening with mileage. Still translucent, no burnt smell, no particles.
Change at the usual interval
Dark brown, cloudy
Losing its protective properties. You may feel shifts getting lazier or harsher.

Near black, burnt smell
The clutches have been overheating and material is circulating in the fluid.
Stop driving, call us
Warm the engine, leave it idling in Park on level ground, pull the transmission dipstick and wipe it on a piece of white paper. Compare the colour. Some newer cars have no dipstick, in which case bring it to us.
